PAN-Aadhaar cards linking: 17 crore PAN cards could soon turn useless

Although the income tax department extended the deadline to link the PAN (Permanent Account Number) card with the Aadhaar card eight times in the past, more than 17 crore PAN card holders have not yet linked the Two documents After the amendment in the 2019 finance bill, the income tax department has the authority to make all those PAN cards that are not linked to Aadhaar not work.



"If a person fails to intimidate the Aadhaar number, the permanent account number assigned to that person will remain inoperative after the date notified in the manner stipulated by the rules," reads Clause 41 of Section 139AA of the Law on Income Tax. The amendment became effective as of September 1, 2019. It is obvious that all of these inoperative PAN cards will be useless unless they are linked to Aadhaar.


The Union Minister of Finance, Anurag Singh Thakur, told Lok Sabha that 30.75 million rupees of PAN were linked to Aadhaar until January, while 17.58 million rupees of bread still have to comply with the guidelines.

India has more than 48 crore PAN card holders while more than 120 crore Indians own Aadhaar cards. The two identity cards are now interchangeable for all purposes related to the income tax department, but it is mandatory to link the two. If the two are not linked and you are using the Aadhaar card instead of PAN, the tax department may issue a new PAN card automatically.

How to link PAN with Aadhaar and Verify the Status:



To link your PAN with Aadhaar, you can visit the electronic filing portal of the income tax department and click on the Aadhaar Link section on the left. You must complete the PAN number, the Aadhaar number and the name. The I-T department will validate your name, date of birth and sex with the details of Aadhaar, after which the link will be made.
